Desert romance with the Belgrade String Quartet
Classical music in the Liwa desert
As part of the Abu Dhabi Classic season, for its second concert in Abu Dhabi, the Belgrade String Quartet / Quintet will be performing in a location that is both magical and highly unusual: the Oasis of Liwa at the Anantara Qasr Al Sarab hotel on Thursday. October 29.
For this exceptional concert the Serbian Quartet has chosen a programme perfectly adapted to the spectacular setting: first, Carl Maria von Weber’s Quintet for Clarinet and Strings that, like very few other pieces of the romantic chamber music repertoire, expresses the immediate intimacy with nature the Romantic Age tried to achieve.
Then, for the second part of the concert, the Belgrade Quartet has chosen a piece even closer related to the desert scenery: Maurice Ravel’s String Quartet in F major, written in 1903, during a period when the imagination of the young composer was predominantly occupied by his fascination for the counts of 1001 Nights, leading, in 1904, to the premiere of his orchestral song cycle Shéhérazade.
With this double, romantic and enchanting perspective, the experiment to bring classical chamber music to the wide openness of the Liwa desert seems all the more justified.
Tickets range from AED250 to AED30 for students. You can also take advantage of a 20% discount to stay at the fabulous desert hotel for the night.
